THE INDIA PROGRAM

The bilateral agreement on educational exchange, signed by Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and U.S. Ambassador Loy Henderson on February 2, 1950, in New Delhi, established the United States Educational Foundation in India (USEFI) to administer the Fulbright Program in India. USEFI offices are located in four metropolitan cities New Delhi, Chennai, Kolkata and Mumbai to provide administrative and academic support.

The grants administered by USEFI are given to Indian scholars, teachers and professionals for research, teaching or study at universities in the United States and to American students, scholars teachers and artists for study, research and teaching at Indian universities and other academic institutions.

The program in India is one of the largest Fulbright programs in the world. More than 8,500 scholars and professionals, about half of whom are Indian and half American, have developed unique bonds of mutual respect and admiration for each other's cultures.

The Indian Fulbrighters have included individual scholars who have reached important positions in their careers. Among the Indian Fulbright alumni are ministers, governors, members of the Planning Commission, chairpersons of the University Grants Commission, governor of the Reserve Bank of India, directors of national institutions as well as a large number of senior bureaucrats, administrators, university vice-chancellors, faculty members and professionals in the arts, drama, journalism, media and several other academic and professional fields involving commerce and industry.
